Samenvatting

Carpooling or ride-sharing schemes are forbidden by law in Finland except for forest workers or logfloaters. A mailed interview was sent to 8800 persons. Of those who answered 64-74% considered carpooling or ride-sharing sensible, while 19-28% thought they had a possibility to start carpooling or ride-sharing. If carpooling is legalised in Finland, the fuel consumed by cars will decrease yearly by about 38.1 million litres. This is about 2.3% of the total fuel consumed by cars. If ride-sharing is also legalised, the savings in fuel do not increase. Carpooling can be recommended on the basis of energy economy.
