Samenvatting

Recognizability of transitions between road categories; The role of road markings and intersection types. The present report describes what is known about the recognizability of transitions between road categories based on the results of three studies that were carried out as part of the SWOV multi-year programme 2007-2010. The report begins with a brief survey of the theoretical and policy back-grounds of the principle of recognizability. This information is based on the literature study that was carried out at the start of the research programme 2007-2010. Following the recommendations of this literature study, two empirical studies were carried out into the recognizability of transitions between rural road categories. These studies will be discussed in two separate chapters. It was first investigated to which extent the recognizability of transitions can be improved by the layout of road sections. The study showed that in many cases this was not sufficient for the transition to be noticed. Therefore, the next study was intended to investigate to which extent the layout of the transition (the intersection) together with the layout of the road sections can contribute to the recognizability of category transitions.
