Samenvatting

It is argued that the results of the simulator study performed earlier within the `Combi-DRIPs' (Dynamic Route Information Panels) project present a case for, under certain conditions, combining DRIPs with section control panels. While decision distances and decision times decline significantly in this combination, compared to those for the separately positioned elements, they (a) do not yet drop below critical levels, and (b) they can be raised somewhat by the addition of a red rim as a `marker' to the section control panels. The combined panel can be applied to a range of situations, and it may contain several types of message on the DRIP such as lengths of queues, expected travel times, or `obstruction' information. n all cases, the section control panels should be provided with a red rim. While it is true that decision distances for combined panels did not reach critical levels, the fact that they dropped significantly indicates the necessity of a field trial. This should be performed, before a final decision as to the implementation of combined panels is taken. In this trial the responses of the driving population to the panels should be investigated.
