Following the interesting results of the application of bar-markings in the UK the province of Friesland decided to carry out an experiment on one of the main roads. Accident analysis showed that traffic approaching the junction near Balk from a specific direction did not slow down to an appropriate speed considering the junction characteristics. The introduction of the bar markings brought down the speed significantly, but the drivers tended to avoid the bar pattern by pulling out to the wrong side of the road and therefore the police stopped the experiment.
