The types and quantities of medication used by those drivers who have been subjected to a blood-test on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol are described by analyses of 40000 alcohol blood-test forms. It was found that 9.7 % of these drivers use medication in conjunction with alcoholic beverages; more than half of the medicines are characterized as adversely affecting driving performance. The influence of the combined use of benzodiazepines and alcoholic beverages on man's behaviour is also investigated. The conclusion of this investigation is that drivers using benzodiazepines should be advised not to drink any alcoholic beverage.
