The phenomenon of increase in scale has also lead to a change in opinion regarding the town. A satisfactory definition seems to be no longer possible; a survey of definitions is given of town, conurbation and agglomerate. The idea of participation as criterion for urban living is suggested. Important are the images held by the inhabitants, because these determine the spatial development.
