Samenvatting

Transport for London (TfL), UK, has launched its London Traffic Systems Vision which aims at establishing London as a 'centre of excellence in dynamic traffic operations' by 2016, through major investment in advanced intelligent transport systems (ITS). TfL is actively encouraging the participation of the ITS industry and private sector partners in its scheme. By mid-2006, it plans to produce its first work programme for realising the Vision, with key delivery stages at 3-4 year intervals. A key milestone in the delivery process will be the 2012 Olympic Games. The implications of new management systems for the London Traffic Control Centre (LTTC) are considered. TfL has launched a project called Schemeworks to rationalise the future deployment and management of traffic signal installations across London. One issue under review is the extent to which London should base its equipment sourcing on compliance with the UTMC (urban traffic management and control) blueprint for urban ITS implementation in the UK. TfL has awarded contracts to ITIS and Trafficmaster to improve the quality of information available to drivers. TfL is a major partner in the European Commission-funded Cooperative Vehicle-Infrastructure Systems (CVIS) project for the development of a multi-channel communications and network platform allowing vehicles to obtain and share information.
