This paper examines the opportunities and challenges associated with the introduction of high-speed rail transport into Portugal. The geographical characteristics of Portugal and the characteristics of the Portuguese transport sector (road, air, rail) are outlined. The background to high speed rail development in Portugal is described. Three schemes were given 'priority scheme' status within the Transeuropean network by the EU: Madrid-Lisbon, Lisbon-Porto (North-South), and New Porto-Vigo. The characteristics of these schemes are outlined. The implications of the new high-speed linesfor modal split in the business and tourist sectors are considered. The regional imbalance associated with the introduction of high speed rail in Portugal and the potential for long-distance commuting is discussed.
