Samenvatting

As the number and proportion of older road users in the United States increases, there is a special urgency to improve their safety and mobility. This paper directs attention to the highway modifications that can make an immediate difference. The modifications suggested are only those that are considered to be possible from a cost standpoint. The priorities for application of the recommendations in this paper are: new construction; reconstruction of current facilities; regularly scheduled maintenance activities and spot treatments where crashes have occurred; and other demonstrated safety problem-solving or locally desired proactive approaches. The highway improvements in this paper represent a subset of the practices recommended in the Federal Highway Administration's "Highway Design Handbook for Older Drivers and Pedestrians."
