Samenvatting

Close cooperation between planners, road designers, road builders and landscape architects prevents the destruction of the natural landscape by the construction of a road. The principles of motorway landscaping are outlined, with special attention to multilevel interchanges which limit the use of space. A varying horizon of the driver, and the sight of varying tree groups and shrubs along the road and on the median zone are effective against fatigue and drowsiness several suitable plant species are listed. Minimization of the danger of wood fires and erosion should also be regarded in the planning stage of the motorway. There is still too little coordinated knowledge regarding the best plant species for a particular soil type and location under the prevailing climatic conditions.
