Samenvatting

A summary of methods and criteria for measuring noise as caused by traffic on motorways is presented. The second part gives a procedure for determining the noise level to be used in the design of motorways. The first part contains a review and comparison of various empirical and theoretical models for assessing traffic noise, it describes the different components of traffic noise and factors which influence it, such as traffic composition, effect of peak levels in noise, number of lanes and road width and adjustment for shielding effects, road surface structure and flow interruption. Future research topics on this subject are suggested.
