How popular is the bicycle as yet ? Speed and distance are the main criteria wether to use a bicycle or not. One proves to know well what the fastest way of tranport is. Especially in the old city the strong point of the bicycle is its competitiveness with the car. Lack of comfort and speed are mentioned as the most important reasons not to use a bicycle. Biking on the whole has a positive image and bike owners have a more positive attitude towards biking than non-bike owners. The last group is more likely to see the negative sides to biking in Amsterdam as traffic danger and the risc of theft. The citizens of Amsterdam with a foreign background and especially the young ones own a bicycle less often than native citizens and use it less. There are still as many bicycles stolen as ten years ago, but for many this is not an impediment to use the bicycle. Most bike users assure themselves by riding an old ramshackle bike on which not too much upkeep is spent. (Author/publisher)
