Samenvatting

Savannah, Georgia is the host city of the Institute of Transportation Engineers 2010 Technical Conference and Exhibit in March 2010. This article highlights some unique transportation-related features of the host city. The city was founded in 1733 and was planned with a grid street network with large squares. Although this system originally was designed for military defence purposes, it proved to be very adaptable to the changing transportation system over time, with the squares functioning almost as modern roundabouts. Although later development reflected the usual pattern of subdivisions with little connectivity to other parts of the city, current planning initiatives for new facilities take into context the adjacent land uses and help ensure that the concept of "complete" streets is implemented.
