This paper discusses the importance of settlement size in achieving more sustainable transport systems and travel behaviour. It establishes the importance of settlement size in reducing the need to travel and encouraging modal shift. It also explores the interrelationships between settlement size, other aspects of urban form and socio-economic characteristics; the manner in which these interactions influence travel patterns and behaviour, using the county of Gloucestershire as a case study example. The paper outlines settlement size thresholds, which encourage sustainable traval behaviour, and how the thresholds vary with other factors (level of local provision, urban densities, location and socioeconomic characteristics of a settlement). The resulting thresholds also consider developers requirements and constraints.
