Samenvatting

This paper uses Census data to analyse key trends in Wellington City’s transport in order to assess the sustainability of the city’s transport system in terms of the guidelines and indicators recommended internationally. This includes an examination of trends in private car ownership and usage, public transport and non-motorised transport. The paper concludes that the city’s transport system shows encouraging signs of being sustainable in terms of declining motor vehicle usage and increasing public transport usage and non-motorised modes, but increases in vehicle ownership levels provide cause for concern in the long term. The paper recommends that investment in alternative transport modes such as public transport is necessary to avoid high levels of car ownership from being translated into car usage.
