Samenvatting

This paper looks at the ways in which freight transport companies can contribute to environmental protection while continuing to run an effective operation, with reference to the Swedish transport company Schenker AG. Transport improvements in emissions and driving practice are being made although laws are often difficult to understand and are not harmonised and supervised. Impact can be made on the transport industry by market forces, political and financial decisions and industry views. Best practice examples from Schenker include "green logistics" which involves the use of emission calculation; a case study where logistics decreased a client company's costs and environmental impact; a carbon dioxide unit for refrigeration; use of global positioning system technology; emission control technology used to upgrade old trucks; biogas and CNG fuelled trucks; and Eco-driving, an economically and ecologically sound driving style.
