Samenvatting

In this paper the authors describe a model system that they have developed using a combined Excel/Visual Basic approach. The case study they describe, which is in the transport planning area, is meant to serve as an illustration of what is seen as a very practical and powerful modelling technique. With regard to the model tool they do not claim any innovative ideas here: they merely describe a state-of-practice disaggregate demand modelling project and the resulting application system as it was prepared for transfer to the client and to third parties. This case study concerns the HSL-Zuid Passenger Choice research project, a study looking at potential demand for the new High-Speed Rail connection between Amsterdam and Brussels/Paris. The main aim of this study was to establish how existing train, car and air passengers in the corridor might transfer to the new High-Speed train once this service would be in place. The current Thalys trains provide a high-speed rail service between Brussels and Paris, but run at conventional speeds between Amsterdam and Brussels. Around 2005 the new HSL-Zuid service will become operational.
