Samenvatting

The author first makes a small survey of the relationship between society and the automobile. The present efforts in the field of automobile technology are to develop a maintenance-free engine. The automobile still is a machine, it has not been fully developed yet as furniture. The problem which need an immediate solution is that of safety and air pollution. The safety problem has two major issues: pedestrian safety in city traffic, and passenger safety on highways. The latter could be solved by lessoning the driver's burden. The author believes that in the future we finally reach the idea of completely automatic driving on speedways in which control is done by machines. The increase of automobile speed has come to a halt, due to limits of human control ability, and the reliability of tyres.
