The Heavy Vehicle Simulator (HVS) is a machine that can simulate several years' heavy traffic in a few months. It was manufactured in South Africa and was paid for jointly by Finland and Sweden. The HVS is mobile and has been used in both countries. Finland and Sweden try to avoid making similar tests and exchange results using a joint database. The machine has been used to accumulate knowledge of pavement response and performance under heavy traffic. HVS has been used to determine the effects of different tyres and the super single wheel on the road surface. HVS has also been used to test two constructions with Icelandic materials and to test roads reinforced with steel mesh.
