This paper focuses on the field recruiting activities involved in obtaining subjects for a large-scale project `Psychobiological studies of alcohol-tolerant drivers'. This was designed to determine reliable and valid biopsychosocial measures of alcohol sensitivity and tolerance in order to differentiate high- and low-tolerant drinkers among male drinking drivers. Drivers were observed drinking in bars and were recruited for experimental sessions involving alcohol administration, thus permitting data collection for each subject both in the field and under carefully controlled laboratory conditions.
