The evidence presented in this paper and in reports elsewhere show that mileage affects the number of accidents less than might be supposed. Several explanations are possible, these are: (1) high mileage drivers may spend a higher proportion of their time on safer roads; (2) those who drive a lot may be safer drivers through practice; (3) poor drivers may avoid driving, and so a group of these drivers would contain more poor drivers than a high mileage group; and (4) a high mileage driver may take extra care to compensate for increased accident risk.
