Literature investigating the use of ignition interlock devices in the US is reviewed. This includes studies of the use of ignition interlock devices in programs involving drink driving offenders and their rate of recidivism. Current studies described include an investigation of the combination of treatment with ignition interlock devices, the effect of subsequent removal of the device and random assignment. Suggestions are made for future research, in particular how behaviour is affected by the removal of the device.
