Samenvatting

Alcohol breath analysed ignition interlock systems present a new deterrence strategy being used by an an increasing number of jurisdictions across the country. These interlock systems offer potential advantages over other DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) sanctions and provide a unique approach to dealing with the problem. However, some programs have encountered administrative problems when interlocks were assigned in large numbers. This paper examines the current research, discusses the advantages and problems associated with interlock programs, and offers suggestions for improving such programs. The potential impact of incorporating interlocks into a DWI program and recommendations for future research are discussed as well. (Author/publisher)
