Samenvatting

Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) have capabilities as communication devices by fast switching of LEDs and modulation of visible light waves. The feasibility of this approach ("iLight") has been already studied, and the results show the low bit error rate in the communication. A field test of "iLight" was carried out for the extended study of "iLight" for intelligent transportation systems (ITS) communications. Full-size LED traffic sign systems were designed and constructed for the evaluation of the communications in an outdoors and mobile environment. The results from the field test were very close to the authors' expectations, and, in this preliminary test, the system has demonstrated a 100% success rate with repeated trials. The field test has demonstrated that large road signs constructed using LEDs based on the iLight technology can indeed be used as an information beacon over a short distance.
