The research reported in this article originally was conceived as a very limited study of the illumination levels needed for adequate performance of certain types of visual tasks that might be required of drivers. The authors originally planned to apply a general method, previously developed for visual tasks related to interior environments, to problems related to determining the illumination requirements for visual performance of driving tasks at night. However, the general method was not entirely satisfactory and new techniques for studying these problems has to be developed.
