Following the recommendation of the joint standing committee on road safety, random breath testing was introduced in New South Wales on 17 December 1982. The effect of random breath testing on the incidence of traffic crashes and drink- driving was examined in three ways. It was found that since the introduction of random breath testing there has been significant reductions in the numbers of traffic crashes and related variables. Also, there has been a significant change in the distribution of the time of day of traffic crashes, the distributions of the age, sex and class of road users involved in traffic crashes and the distribution of the severity of traffic crashes.
