Samenvatting

This document presents the findings obtained in a comparative study of conventional and wide base radial truck tires. The primary objective of the study was an assessment of the effects on highway safety when heavy trucks operate on wide base single tires instead of conventional dual tires. The study included laboratory and field tests conducted by the Texas Transportation Institute during the calendar years 1990 and 1991. The research focused on two aspects of tire performance relevant to highway safety, stopping distance and dynamic hydroplaning. The study conclusion was that the adoption of wide base radial truck tires will not adversely impact highway safety. (A)
