Samenvatting

This report describes some effects of ideology and tradition on urban planning in China. The report begins with an historical survey as well as an overview of some prevalent ideas, and how these have affected spatial development. The description of policy and reform programmes explains why spatial organization has its present form. This description and analysis is focused on one of the main problems in China: the old infrastructure in relation to the development of traffic. In addition, the report briefly describes the urban development and the planning concept in the Netherlands. Some comparisons are made between traffic behaviour and planning in both countries which differ totally in scale, culture and spatial planning. However, both countries have in common the important role of the bicycle as a transport mode.
