Samenvatting

This paper demonstrates the methodology to provide appropriate yellow interval time based on the relationship between a standard deceleration rate value used in the ITE recommended practice and deceleration rates determined from pavement friction factor. The appropriate yellow interval time in this paper is determined by the choice of deceleration rates utilizing pavement friction factor detected by the sensors for traffic and roadway surface conditions, which is remotely installed under the pavement of the roadway. The results and implications are discussed along with a review of earlier research work regarding approach speeds, choice of deceleration rate, and decisions to stop or proceed at the onset of the yellow interval. Findings from this research suggest that yellow interval time needs to be adjusted according to the roadway surface conditions, which provides not only high driver compliance towards stopping at the onset of yellow but also improvement of the efficient green time.
