The objective of the study has been a documentation of the traffic surveillance measures carried out by the police in the State of Brandenburg. The study revealed that the tasks specified in the laws, official and administrative regulations, decrees and directives of the State of Brandenburg have been extensively implemented by the police. An in-depth study has been undertaken of speed checks and drunk driving checks. Both were focal points of the surveillance activities at the police headquarters of the State of Brandenburg in 1993. Up to 80 % of all surveillance activities were taken up by these control activities. The general suggestion is that the present accident reduction recommendations should be examined based on the current accident situation (pin map of accidents types and locations) and the results of surveillance measures undertaken. The study also revealed differences in the surveillance activities between police stations. Increased efforts will be made in future to achieve uniform surveillance procedures at all police stations. It is therefore suggested that the results of this study be taken up at staff discussions of the police and the experience of police headquarters be exchanged on a regular basis. Selected recommendations and suggestions for a revision of the surveillance concepts are compiled and presented in this paper. (A)
