Samenvatting

The research in Advanced Vehicle Control and Safety Systems (AVCSS) has led to the development of a variety of sensing, vehicle control and communication technologies. In the recent demonstration of Automated Highway System (AHS) conducted in San Diego in 1997, partners of National Automated Highway Systems Consortium (NAHSC) demonstrated the technical feasibility of a combination of different advanced technologies for highway automation. While the development of higher level of intelligence and automation is continuously a long term goal for vehicle-highway systems, federal and state DOTs are interested in near term implementations of AVCSS. As an example, the latest Intelligent Vehicle Initiative (IVI) Program recently launched by the federal DOT plans to apply AVCSS technologies to improve highway safety. Consistent with IVI objectives, in 1997, California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in partnership with Advanced Highway Maintenance and Construction Technologies (AHMCT) Program at University of California at Davis and University of California PATH Program, initiated a research program exploring opportunities for implementing AVCSS technologies for highway maintenance vehicles. The first project is to develop an advanced driver assist system for snow removal operations. This paper describes the technical aspects of the driver assist system for snowplows. (A*)
