A new level of ‘best practice’ in the management of the positional recording and re-location process of underground infrastructure in NZ is now a practical reality. In essence, the problem historically has been that the non-metallic services (water, gas, drainage) were unable to be readily located with any practical surface-based technologies. Accordingly, and in tandem with the fact that many of the ‘as-built’ records for these services had never been accurate, the risk to their accidental damage during normal roading excavation was unduly elevated. Major collateral damage was imposed regularly upon the buried infrastructure as a result, to the detriment of the integrity and long-term viability of the affected assets, the health and safety of workers on site, and the general inconvenience and cost to the asset owner, the contractors, and the stakeholders alike.
