Samenvatting

Difficulties in the implementation of sustainable urban transport policies were studied over a three-year period. Integrated policy packages of a cross-sectoral mix of regulatory, pricing and technological measures are considered necessary to motivate supply and demand elements in urban land use and transport markets. National governments are considered especially important in improving opportunities for the implementation of sustainable urban travel. A survey of cities in a wide range of countries sets out the main trends in land use and travel. The need for long term consistent approaches by national governments, the integration of land use and transport policies, and the provision of alternative modes of transport such as walking, cycling and public transport are discussed.
