Hungary in its post-transition period has found itslef struggling with several problems in its urban transport systems. Urban roads are increasingly crowded and car ownership and use are rising. Hungary's cities are wrestling with how to maintain a highly favourable modal share for their well-developed public transport systems, while contending with the financial burden of ageing rolling stock and infrastructure. Unabated commercial and retail developent in the periphery of cities where there is little access to public transoprt is further increasing the demand for car travel. This reoprt provides an analysis of the policy and decision-making structures that are responsible for the implementation of urban travel policies in Hungary. It also proposes ways in which progress towards more sustainable urban travel can be achieved.
