Samenvatting
Large-scale liberalisation of bus services adopted in 1992 gave new dimensions to the problems of bus transport system in Delhi (India). The introduction of individually owned buses under the large-scale privatisation changed the very nature of public transport service by replacing the service oriented objective of public transport with a commercial one. The problems posed by liberalisation grew beyond control, forcing the government to review the policy. This paper describes the experiment with liberalisation, the experience with it, its implications, and the policy options to improve the bus system of Delhi.
