The use of dynamic bend lighting to reduce the recognition distance for certain objects when driving at night is discussed. It is anticipated that the first approvals for dynamic bend lighting in Europe will be achieved in 2003. While the recognition distance for the driver is kept constant, the glare for the opposing traffic is also kept constant. This is achieved by swivelling the headlamp beam. The glare for opposing traffic was evaluated by simulation and it was shown that the illuminance at the eye of an opposing driver is only slightly increased for a swivelled headlamp. The glare in left bends was kept at the same level as that for opposing traffic on a straight section of a street whereas in right bends the glare was reduced.
