Samenvatting

Every day, drivers have to stop at traffic lights showing red. This causes not only delays to drivers, but also frustration, extra emission and fuel consumption. In the Danish study, Better Traffic Signals, an attempt hasbeen made to estimate the national level of delay and fuel consumption caused by traffic lights. Furthermore, the potential for reducing these numbers is estimated based on some simple assumptions of traffic volumes and typical traffic performance measures in signalized junctions. Traffic signal retiming and improved maintenance of hardware are beneficial methods formaintaining efficient traffic signal operations. The objective of this study is to illustrate the importance from both driver's and the society's perspective of keeping signal timing plans up-to-date, and the detector equipment well maintained.
