Samenvatting

The City Link Project in Melbourne is the largest infrastructure project undertaken in Australia since the construction of the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Scheme. A major requirement of this project was the delivery an environmentally friendly road system. In this case, the requirement was to deliver a road that met a strict traffic noise level criterion of LA,10(18 hr) of 63 dBA. Considerable effort and cost was expended in designing noise barriers to achieve the criterion while providing an aesthetically pleasing result for both motorists and adjacent residents. Post opening noise level measurements show that the barrier design was effective and that the noise level objective was indeed achieved. Compared with traffic noise levels prior to the opening of City Link, there has been a considerably improved acoustic environment for many residents. (a)
