Samenvatting

Traffic flow data can be recorded as point data or section data. Point data is data registered at a point on a road section and describes traffic at or near the point. Section data is data for a road section of significant length. Traditionally, traffic data registration meant point data, but with new technology and new methods, real time registration of section data is now an option. The Section Data Project in Norway clearly demonstrated the usefulness of section data in describing traffic flow quality, and consequently for traffic control and road user information. For description of the traffic flow over a section of considerable length, section data are particularly superior to point data. Equipment and methods for section data registration based on absolute as well as relative recognition of vehicles have been tested, and the experiences gained are positive. Work on generalised systems based on relative recognition is intensified, the reason being a wish for a system that can be used on any road section and in addition secure anonymity for the road users.
