Samenvatting

This paper provides a proposal basis for a research program that uses the modelling of Intelligent Transport Systems within a Central Business District as the catalyst for discovery and innovation of new and improved techniques for developing traffic microscopic simulations. The use of traffic microscopic simulations (micro-simulation) is by no means new, and currently, there are many validated traffic micro-simulation packages commercially available. Although they provide excellent short-term simulation accuracy, they are not necessarily developed for use over the long term. This is evident primarily in the way they use data internally and display results. This research program will look at these limitations; propose new techniques to overcome these limitations now and into the future; and test the proposed techniques using the modelling of Intelligent Transport Systems within a CBD as the basis for testing hypotheses.
