Samenvatting

This report surveys the improvement of transport for people with mobility handicaps, but does not detail specific guidelines. It gives relevant advice and some details of the more important aspects of transport infrastructure, vehicles, and information, and includes many references to other documents providing further details. It is estimated that about 12% of people in Europe are disabled, but that 20% to 30% of people have a mobility impairment. Information, whether visual or spoken, should be clear, concise, accurate, and timely. These criteria are important for all people who travel, but especially important for disabled people. The most important aspects of the road and pedestrian environment are: footpaths and footways, junctions and road crossings, pedestrianised areas, roadworks, tactile surfaces, car parking, and longer road journeys. Important aspects of infrastructure include: entering and moving within a building, and boarding a vehicle. New types of transport service include individual and shared demand-responsive transport, community transport, and shared transport services. The report also discusses different types of public transport vehicles, accessible buses, cars, and the roles of government.
