The UK Government is committed to an integrated transport policy which encompasses accessible public transport, public transport infrastructure and a barrier-free pedestrian environment. This has to be achieved in the framework of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995, to be phased in completely by 2004. Transport vehicles are covered by separate provisions. These guidelines are intended to provide general guidance on established best practice. Many of the guidelines are also useful for those travelling with small children or heavy luggage, the elderly and those with temporary disabilities. Many access improvements may be incorporated into building maintenance. Access audits are recommended. The first section provides basic information about the space requirements of disabled people, followed by sections on footways, footpaths and pedestrian areas including pedestrian crossings; tactile paving surfaces; car parking; bus stops; taxi ranks; transport terminals; ticket offices and other facilities; toilets; information signs; lighting; and access in the countryside. Consultation, training and management are discussed.
