In this chapter the author describes imaginary journeys undertaken by a child on his way to and from school. By providing a running commentary on the thoughts going through his mind she provides an insight into the situations experienced and the decisions taken. It issuggested that the thought processes associated with unaccompanied travel are essential for the development of a healthy personality. These are not restricted to decision-taking but involve the assimilation of details of the child's environment and social interaction with other people. These experiences are restricted in the case of the accompanied child, even more so in the child travelling by car.
