Samenvatting

Road safety is an aspect of outmost concern to many sectors of our society. It is now common to find out public and private organizations, as well as third sector agencies implementing actions to prevent the occurrence and reduce the severity of road collisions. However, little is known about the effectiveness of unconventional actions for the improvement of road safety. The literature suggests the use of performance indicators to monitor the results of actions and help the decision making process. The objectiveof this paper is to show how performance assessment can be inserted into the context of road safety by proposing road safety indicators to a non-governmental organization (NGO) operating in Brazil. This NGO promotes activities related to road safety education, particularly those aimed at young people. This work can be used as an aid for setting up indicators for similar road safety related organizations operating in other countries.
