Samenvatting

This chapter considers the use of indirect vision systems in the design of vehicles. Aspects of the human visual system relevant to the design of indirect vision systems are first reviewed. Past research on indirect vision, primarily rear-view mirrors, is then summarised including aspects of the field of view, convex mirrors, the placement of displays, reflectivity and glare. Recommendations are made concerning future research including the electronic control of reflectivity, the effects of convex mirrors upon vision, and overlapping fields of view. The possibility of using more technically advanced systems such as radar or sonar is noted. The most important area for research however is identified as the unresolved issue of the conflict between field of view and image quality.
