The study indicates that the use of child restraints is increasing, that child restraints decrease the occurrence of injury by over 80 percent, that sitting on an adults lap decreases the risk of minor injury but increase the risk of serious injury, and that unrestrained children under 5 year are, in general, less likely to suffer serious injury than older unrestrained car occupants. Trends in child restraint use are reviewed, and the effectiveness of child restraints are discussed.
