The authors examine the influence of vehicle characteristics on risk-taking behaviour in driving. Using convergent models, the paper attempts to determine: (1) the magnitude of car type and risk-taking behaviour; (2) the causal direction of this relationship; and (3) which vehicle characteristics influence risk-taking. Based on evidence that different types of vehicle are known to have varying associated accident risks, it can be argued that this variation can in part be due to driving behaviour. Changes in the driving environment and resulting changes in driving behaviour and accident risk are considered.
