Samenvatting

The material deals with 1,021 drivers stopped by the Traffic Police. One hundred and sixty-seven of the drivers were cautioned for dangerous driving. In the control material, the statutory visual acuity (0.7-0.3) was defective in 6.4% of the cases. In the group with dangerous overtaking when another motor vehicle is approaching visual acuity was defective in 19.2%. The difference is statistically highly significant. In cases of overtakings on hill, bend, etc., defective vision seemed to be of less importance. On the other hand, in cases of careless emergency to main road, several cases were clearly due to the driver's one eye being blind. Monocular drivers seemed to be as dangerous in traffic as binocular drivers with defective binocular vision. (Author)
