Examples of discontinuities are: holes, ice, edge dropt, curbs and changes in surface friction. These conditions are frequently unexpected by vehicle operators. The purpose of this report is to present what has been learned about discontinuities in roadway surfaces. The objective is to provide information which may prove useful to highway engineers and administrators when decisions on maintenance expenditures are required.
