Young drivers were subjected to attitude tests before and after a short term instructional programme concerning traffic risks. Two groups of young drivers 18-20 and 21-24 years old were involved. The programme included 60 minutes classroom teaching with slides followed by 40 to 60 minutes assessment of obstacles in an off-road situation. The concept of `attitude' and the possibility of influencing it are discussed. The authors suggest that the teaching of risk assessment is similar to any other form of teaching. An improvement in risk awareness was observed after the training programme and was more pronounced in some areas than others.
